Fascinated by distant stars, blazing fire and wild animals, the safari offers children intense nature experiences. Children want excitement and adventure, and we are familiar with these requirements for a family safari. Our child-friendly safari consists of a lot of game viewing, child-friendly activities and soft adventure “glamping”. A form of camping more luxurious than traditional camping. Your journey takes you to the endless sea of sand dunes of the Namib Desert, to the charming coastal town of Swakopmund with exciting activities, to the Erongo Mountains learning about the Bushmen and their way of life and to the Etosha National Park, one of the oldest and largest game parks in Africa. After spending time at a private game reserve, you return to Namibia’s capital Windhoek.
Arrival at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, which is situated approximately 40 km from Windhoek. Transfer to Windhoek where you complete formalities and collect your rented vehicle. For safety there are child/booster seats in the vehicle for the little ones. On request and subject to availability we can also book a Car-Fi, so that the younger kids stay connected to the “outside world”. The Car-Fi converts your vehicle into a WiFi hotspot. Shopping for your trip can be done in one of the many supermarkets. A variety of drinks, snacks, fruits, and sweets are available. On request we gladly meet you personally at the hotel to discuss your tour and any questions you might have. Spend some time sightseeing in Windhoek. In the evening you can have dinner in one of the recommended restaurants and enjoy typical Namibian dishes.
Start your journey and drive through the picturesque Khomas Hochland until you reach the edge of the escarpment. Enjoy the stunning view over the Namib Desert! Continue down the steep Spreetshoogte pass and via Solitaire to your accommodation in the Namib desert. To the west a sea of dunes extends as far as the eye can see; to the east vast plains reach out to distant mountains. Enjoy a sundowner and listen to the evening sounds of the barking gecko – a concert never to be forgotten. Accommodation in a fully equipped Luxury Tent: Tents are equipped with beds and an en-suite bathroom. A fully equipped kitchen on the outside terrace and an outside braai (barbeque), as well as a fire pit promise an interesting stay. Kids usually love roasting marshmallows around a campfire.
Today you enjoy the unique desert scenery with some of the highest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. The variety of colors and shapes are fantastic! The dunes tower over the Sossusvlei, a huge dried-up clay pan. Climb up the dunes and enjoy the view. It is great fun going down again – running, sliding, or tumbling! The marvelous beauty of the Vlei with its dunes and ancient camel thorn trees more than amply rewards those who journey there. Visit also the Sesriem canyon which was carved into the rock by the seasonal Tsauchab River over a period of 2 million years. During the afternoon you can explore the Namib in your own time on an electrical bicycle (Fat bike) and you can go on a guided nature drive taking you to the interesting Petrified/fossilized Dunes.
Journey via the Ghaub and Kuiseb passes through the Namib Naukluft Park to the fossil Welwitschia plants. Here you will find the largest concentration of this “living Fossil” plant. Continue to the Moonlandscape, an area of sharp, craggy, and barren rock formations. From here it is not far to the charming coastal town of Swakopmund.
Today you drive from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay from where your boat cruise starts. You depart from the Walvis Bay Waterfront for a marine sightseeing tour in the bay area in search of the marine big 5: Whales, Dolphins, Mola, Leatherback turtle and seals. In season (July to November), larger mammals such as the Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whales are often spotted. Bottlenose, Heaviside and Dusky dolphins are regularly seen, as are Mola Molas and Leatherback Turtles. You return to the Waterfront at around 12h30.
For older children we recommend quad biking in the afternoon in the surrounding dunes of Swakopmund. Your guide will give you instructions on how to drive a quadbike in the dunes and will accompany you on this exciting tour.
Today you participate in another guided activity. The Living Desert Tour is an exciting educational tour which discovers the beauty and life within the coastal dunes of the Namib. This tour focuses on the fauna and flora of the dune belt and includes a 4×4 scenic dune drive with excellent photographic opportunities. You are introduced to some of the fascinating, hidden life in this apparently barren landscape that is part of the Namib Desert. Here you can find creatures endemic to the Namib.
Spend the afternoon at leisure in Swakopmund and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this coastal town, nestling between the desert and the Atlantic Ocean.
Drive inland past the Spitzkoppe Mountain and via Usakos to the Erongo Mountains. Here Bushmen paintings are silent evidence of the early hunters who inhabited this area, telling stories of bygone eras. We recommend visiting the nearby interesting Living San Museum. You can go hunting and gathering with the San, learn how to make fire, what edible plants there are, how to make weapons, jewelry and other equipment, how to sing, dance, heal and much more.
The Etosha National Park awaits you! Established in 1907, it is one of the oldest and largest conservation areas in Africa. Whatever the time of year, Etosha never fails to fascinate.
Accommodation in a fully equipped Luxury Tent: Tents are equipped with beds and an en-suite bathroom. A fully equipped kitchen on the outside terrace and an outside braai (barbeque), as well as a fire pit promise an interesting stay.
Spend also the next two days in the Etosha National Park. Waterholes along the edge of the pan guarantee rewarding and often spectacular game viewing. The large variety of birds provide opportunities for bird watching at waterholes. A closer look at the trees and shrubs of Etosha helps to add interest to game viewing and to understand animals’ habits.
Drive through typical African bush landscape to a lodge situated halfway on your way to Windhoek. During the afternoon you can go on a guided game drive to see a large variety of wildlife.
Return via Okahandja to Namibia’s capital Windhoek, where you can spend some time shopping, visiting the many curio shops and the Namibia Craft Centre. Return your rented vehicle in Windhoek to the car rental company. Transfer back to the Hosea Kutako International Airport in time for your flight. Going home with unforgettable memories and experiences we wish you a pleasant flight!
If you would like to experience even more adventure, you can alternatively spend the nights on camping sites and travel in a four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with roof tents and camping equipment.
