Your journey starts in Namibia. First explore the red sand dunes of the Kalahari with its old camel thorn trees before you continue to the sea of sand dunes in the Namib Desert. The variety of colours and shapes is fantastic! After visiting the Tiras Mountains, proceed to the ghost town of Kolmannskuppe near Lüderitzbucht. Another highlight is your visit to the second largest canyon in the world. Further south and located in South Africa, you visit Namaqualand. If it rains enough in winter, it transforms into a lush carpet of wildflowers. After spending time in the Cedar Mountains continue to Cape Town. Enjoy sundowners on the red dunes as you experience the beauty of the Kalahari at sunset. Experience the dramatic change from blazing sunshine to twinkling stars.
Continue through picturesque landscapes of the Namib desert to the Sesriem area, the entrance to the Namib Naukluft Park. Enjoy the unique desert scenery with some of the highest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. The variety of colors and shapes are fantastic! The dunes tower over the Sossusvlei, a huge dried-up clay pan. The marvelous beauty of the Vlei with its dunes and ancient camel thorn trees more than amply rewards those who journey there. Visit also the Sesriem canyon which was carved into the rock by the seasonal Tsauchab River over a period of 2 million years. The name Sesriem stems from the days of the early settlers who had to tie six leather thongs to a bucket to scoop water from the bottom of the gorge.
Drive south via Betta to a farm in the Tiras Mountains on the edge of the Namib Desert dunes. Whether on a scenic drive on the farm or on a walking trail, the landscape presents an abundance of breathtaking views and hosts a wealth of fauna and flora. The owners attend personally to the guests and provide interesting information about life at the edge of the Namib Desert.
Continue west to the coastal town of Lüderitz, renowned for its old-world charm and distinctly German colonial architecture. Visit Kolmannskuppe, an interesting old ghost town of the diamond days. During the afternoon you can visit the surrounding bays of Lüderitz and the Dias Cross on Dias Point just next to the old light tower near Lüderitz.
A captivating feature of the Sperrgebiet are the legendary wild horses seen from the road when traveling between Lüderitz and Aus. Continua via Aus to the Gondwana Canyon Park. The daily life of the area’s early inhabitants, the Bondelswart-Nama, is depicted on murals in the restaurant and chalets.
Visit the famous Fish River Canyon, second largest natural canyon on earth. The canyon is a spectacular natural phenomenon that took hundreds of millions of years to evolve. It inspires awe in those who gaze into its depths from the viewpoints. The different viewpoints on the eastern rim of the canyon, which can be reached by car, offer spectacular views of the Canyon landscape and the river far below.
After a leisurely breakfast you drive south and enter South Africa at the border post Noordoewer/Vioolsdrif. From here you continue to Springbok, the capital of Namaqualand, renowned for the variety and wealth of its wildflowers in spring.
Namaqualand is Cinderella country. For much of the year, the undulating semi-desert is rather unremarkable. But after the right amount of winter rainfall, the terrain is transformed into a carpet of brilliant blooms from one horizon to another. The flowering period lasts from June to latest August/September, provided there is winter rainfall.
Travelling further south the surroundings of the quiet towns of Kamieskroon, Garies and Vanrhynsdorp are renowned for the extravagance of their spring flowers. Continue to the Cedarberg Mountains. Characterized by gnarled cedar trees, craggy peaks, spectacular weathered rocks, and fine examples of Bushman rock art. The rich plant life includes spring annuals, fynbos, and indigenous forest.
Today you continue via Citrusdal and Malmesbury to South Africa’s oldest city. With its majestic Table Mountain backdrop, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
A popular drive runs along the coast and offers a series of panoramic views to Hout Bay, alive with the bustle of fishing boats. Continue along the scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive to Simon’s Town, where you visit the largest penguin colony in Africa. Drive on through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve to Cape Point. The reserve is the Cape’s largest natural wildflower garden. On a clear day you can see from Cape Point distant horizons beyond False Bay.
The best view of Cape Town and beyond is from the top of Table Mountain. For exceptional views, take a ride in the cable car. Visit the National Botanic Gardens of Kirstenbosch, sprawled over the eastern slope of Table Mountain. Spring is undoubtedly the best season to visit, from August to October. Continue to Groot Constantia, the oldest wine-making center in South Africa. The wine museum in the cellar is of particular interest. Return to Cape Town. The restoration of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront evokes images of the seafaring activities of the 19th century. It is a working harbor and lively entertainment area where shopping options invite you to endlessly browse.
Dominated by indigo mountains, the Cape Wine Routes are immensely popular throughout the year. Major estates within easy reach of Cape Town are situated in the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek districts. The wine lands provide wonderful opportunities for wine lovers to sample and buy noble vintages.
