Your guide takes over, while you can sit back and relax and just enjoy the safari to the fullest. This tour takes you to Namibia’s most popular sights in 10 days. The safari takes you to the Namib desert. Towering dunes, shimmering pans, and an endless sea of sand, this is Sossusvlei, boasting the highest dunes in the world. Explore the Atlantic coastline, stretching along Namibia’s west coast. Rock engravings at Twyfelfontein are silent evidence of the early hunters who inhabited this area, telling stories of bygone eras. The Etosha National Park is one of the oldest and largest game parks in Africa. A large variety of animals can be viewed especially at the numerous water holes. After spending time in Etosha you return to Namibia’s capital Windhoek.
Upon your arrival at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will be met by our experienced local tour guide, who will take you to your hotel in Windhoek. After check-in at the accommodation and if time permits, you will be taken on a city tour which is rounded off by a visit to our township, Katutura.
Our journey starts from Windhoek through farmland rich in vegetation. We wind our way down one of the passes and down the Great Escarpment into the Namib desert. Our accommodation is located in the magnificent scenery of the Namib. In the afternoon, we enjoy a drive through this beautiful landscape and absorb the earthy desert colours.
Early in the morning we start our excursion to Sossusvlei and experience the splendour of the awakening day. The highest dunes on earth can be found here. The apricot-coloured sand dunes rise into the blue sky. After the impressions of the morning, we visit the Sesriem Canyon, which suddenly forms a narrow gorge in the conglomerate. It seems almost unreal. Then we return to the lodge and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
We drive via Solitaire, the Gaub- and the Kuisebpass and come across impressive rock formations. The Namib-Naukluft Park is the largest park in Africa and was founded in 1907. The park’s present boundaries were established in 1978 by the merging of the Namib Desert Park, the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park and parts of Diamond Area 1 and some other bits of surrounding government land. We travel through seemingly lifeless gravel plains that are full of interesting plant life and home to a rich world of small animals. We reach the important harbour town of Walvis Bay and continue to Langstrand, where our accommodation is situated.
In the morning we climb aboard for a 3-hour boat or catamaran cruise. We learn all about the rich and cold Benguela Current, which contributes to the economy through its abundant fish population. We meet the large fur seal colony up close on the headland of the large lagoon. Sometimes different types of dolphins appear and play in the water around the boat. Walvis Bay is a well-known Ramsar Site, which contributes to the protection of migratory birds. On board fresh Atlantic Oysters, sandwiches, South African sparkling wine and light drinks are served. Afterwards we drive to Swakopmund, a colourful, very friendly, old and yet modern town that is a popular holiday resort. Spend the afternoon at leisure. Optional sightseeing flights or other activities like quad biking in the dunes can be arranged.
Early departure to Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage site that offers a great variety of rock engravings that we visit and try to decipher. On the way we pass Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg, with an altitude of 2500m above sea level. Great rock formations made from granite inspire our view.
Today we continue to our next destination the famous Etosha National Park. We end the day with our first short game drive in the park.
Please note: Game drives in the Etosha National Park are done in our own vehicle.
We make our way through the park to our next accommodation. The Etosha National Park may be one of the most important nature conservation parks in Africa. In fact, an almost paradise-like life unfolds here on a total area of 22,270 km². Hundreds of animal species, rare shrubs and trees, as well as impressive landforms combined to an ensemble of breath-taking beauty. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to October: Then huge herds of animals gather at the water holes and you can observe the impressive wildlife. This park is all about game viewing.
Our game drives in the Etosha National Park are scheduled for the entire day. We have enough time to spend at water holes and watch the animals and listen to their sounds. It is often a constant coming and going of various game species. The Etosha pan forms the centre of the park. It is 129 km long and up to 72 km wide. Every year, rain turns the majestic plain into a meter-deep lake, which attracts numerous water birds for nesting.
We make our way back to Windhoek via a few small towns, such as Tsumeb, Otavi, Otjiwarongo and Okahandja. Arrival in the afternoon. You will be dropped off at your accommodation of choice or transferred to the airport for your outward flight.
